Foundations for Learning (GSD 101)

(3-credit-hours, Fall Semester)

At EKU, all first-year students take an academic orientation class, as required by the university. NOVA learners enroll in a specially designed orientation course taught by NOVA professionals with assistance from Peer Leaders. The intent of the course is to provide foundational knowledge and skills in critical and creative thinking and to increase student success and retention. The class design ensures supportive, individual attention, valuable instruction, focused academic advising, friendly peer leaders, and structured opportunities to meet new people and to have fun!

The course curriculum is designed to help learners:
  • Demonstrate knowledge about EKU academic policies, procedures and resources.
  • Pursue a path to self-discovery through career exploration & self awareness activities.
  • Identify successful student behavior and formulate a holistic plan for academic development.
  • Develop an awareness of the diverse campus population and opportunities for involvement.
  • Create a class schedule that fulfills university requirements.
The NOVA Orientation course is central to the NOVA learning community.

NOVA Leadership Dynamics Course (GSD 225 S)

(1-credit-hour, Spring Semester)


Second semester Freshmen NOVA learners may enroll in GSD 225 S (Leadership Dynamics), a one-credit-hour course taught by NOVA professionals staff with assistance from student Peer Assistants. It provides an introduction to leadership theory and practice, promoting the development of self-understanding and appreciation of individual leadership talents, styles and preferences through in-class learning and experiential opportunities. The course uses service-learning to enhance the teamwork philosophy.

The course curriculum is designed to enhance the learner's cultural competency and critical thinking skills through:
  • Examining basic concepts associated with leadership.
  • Experiencing working in a team to identify and engage in a Leadership Development Service-Learning project.
  • Exploring your own leadership potential.
NOVA learners who take the GSD 225 S course and meet other eligibility requirements earn the NOVA Grant for their fall semester of their second year.
